Rehearsals
- Typical pattern: 6 weeks, Mon/Wed/Fri 7:30–10:00pm, with Sunday rehearsals on the last two weekends (times to be negotiated and VM informed).
- Longer schedules (e.g., musicals, panto, holiday disruptions) should be checked with Prod. Comm. and discussed with the Venue Manager.
- Studio productions: If you need specific seating layouts, discuss with the Venue Manager and Theatre Technician. Notify Box Office of seat counts. Studio shows generally open to the public on Monday night (sometimes swapped for a Saturday matinee). Ensure steward seating (3 seats) is allocated with your SM. You should consult with Front of House to ensure the Stewards seats are in the correct location. Make sure the Stage Manager liaises with Front of House to agree arrangements for pre show announcements and signal for starting the show.
- Any room/stage use outside the normal pattern must be arranged with the Venue Manager.
- Rehearsal Schedule: Provide as early as possible. Include which parts of the script are rehearsed when; avoid over-calling minor roles; include technical timelines (rehearsal props, stage access, etc.).
- Stage access: Usually only 9 clear days before first night. Coordinate with SM, builder, designer, lighting, and tech teams; confirm with VM & Technician. Do not expect stage time for cast until tech teams are ready - sometimes not until Friday of the 9 days.
- Technical Rehearsal: Normally Thursday before the show. Ensure all SM and technical teams attend and run all cues in order to make Friday’s dress smooth. Decide which cast members need to be present and give plenty of notice.
- Final Rehearsals: Hand the production to the Stage Manager after the Sunday or Monday dress. SM sets backstage procedures, call times, signing-in, discipline, etc. The SM is in charge backstage for the run.
> Note: No one should attend rehearsals (including in the auditorium) without the director’s permission. Once on stage, the Stage Manager ensures no unauthorised access.
